JPEG-Graphiken haben eine Farbtiefe von bis zu 24 Bit (das entspricht 16,7 Millionen Farben). Das Prinzip der Kompression nach dem JPEG-Verfahren beruht darauf, dass sehr ähnliche Farbwerte in dem zu komprimierenden Bild gleichgesetzt werden.
